Create a Stereo File From 2 Mono Files - Pro Tools

By TOM BOWSER

Use this process to create a single true stereo interleaved track by combining 2 separate audio tracks. The 2 tracks you combine must have originally been the left and right sides/tracks of the same true stereo file.

To create a single stereo file from 2 mono files:

  • Enable the "Smart Tool" by left clicking on it. It is the bar across the top of the Trimmer, Selector and Grabber tools.

Pro Tools Smart Tool

  • Create a new stereo audio track (Press and hold the Ctrl + SHIFT key then press the letter n key).
  • Position the new stereo audio track below the two individual mono tracks in the Edit window.
  • Select one of the two individual mono tracks. You select an entire track by left clicking on the bottom half of the track/clip. The selected track or clips background will darken.
  • Press and hold down the SHIFT key on your keyboard.
  • Select the second mono track while continuing to hold down the SHIFT key.

  • Left click and hold down your left mouse button on the bottom half of one of the two selected tracks. Drag the track on to the new stereo track you created. With both tracks selected when you drag one track both tracks will be dragged at the same time.

You now have a re-combined stereo track. See image above.
